Ready for Anything:

Emergency Preparedness for People with Disabilities

Emergencies can happen at any time. In Idaho, wildfires in the summer and big winter storms can cause power outages, road closures, and other problems. When this happens, it can be harder for people with disabilities to get the help, medicine, or equipment they need. That is why it is important to plan ahead.

The Idaho Centers for Independent Living (CILs) and the Idaho State Independent Living Council (SILC) are offering annual trainings focused on summer season and winter weather to help people with disabilities prepare before emergencies happen.

The trainings will take place on:

·        Wednesday, June 3 at 3:00 PM Mountain Time – Getting ready for summer season

·        Wednesday, October 14 at 3:00 PM Mountain Time – Getting ready for winter storms

The trainings will be held on Zoom.

These trainings are made for people with disabilities, but family members, caregivers, service providers, and community partners are welcome to join too.

Each training will last 90 minutes, and there will be a 15-minute break during the session.

During the training, we will talk about simple ways to get ready before an emergency happens. You will learn how to make a personal emergency plan, build an emergency supply kit, prepare for power outages, and know what to do if you need to leave your home quickly. We will also talk about things that may be important if you use a wheelchair, medical equipment, service animals, or daily medications.

You will also learn about local resources that can help during emergencies and how Centers for Independent Living can support you in making your own plan.

Being prepared can help you stay safe and keep your independence during an emergency.

Watch for registration information this spring and fall. Join us and learn how to be ready before the next emergency happens.

The Zoom link and materials will be sent to you one week before the event, but only if you register! If you need an accommodation to participate in the training, please let us know when you register so we can support your access.
